I'll get straight to the point, I need some help...If you haven't already guessed by the title or the picture in this post, I need some suggestions on what kinds of toys to get for our little girl of 18 months. Some of you may be wondering why it took us this long to buy gender-specific toys for her, but I suppose deep down inside I was hoping she wouldn't be a "girly-girl."
The other reason is that I wanted to be sure that any toys we bought would be used and not just tossed on the side. In any case, this all started because lately we've been noticing that our little girl really enjoys wearing accessories (hats and especially shoes) and cute outfits. The icing on the cake for me was when we went to my cousin's house and there was a baby doll on the ground and she started playing with it (trying to feed it and put a blanket on it).
So now I turn to you my friends, what are some basic toys that a 18-month-old girl might enjoy? I'm thinking baby doll and can't think of much else...So chime in and help our little girl out...Thanks!
Hi Ryan! I'm not keen on the total gender-typing toys out there. I don't like Disney princesses, Barbies, Bratz, and other toys that make girls think all there is to life is tiaras, frilly dresses, and high-heels. At 18 months, I would suggest the Lego Duplo line of blocks. They have different themes (i.e., zoo, Cars, doctor's office, etc.) that are great for little hands (ages 18 months+) and build their imagination too. Lil' K has the MegaBloks too, which I am not keen on too much because they don't stay together as well as the Legos do - buildings tend to get knocked over way too easily. But she uses those blocks not only for building, but also as props for pretend play. One of the toys that is typically a "boy" toy that Lil' K loves is her orange toolbox. She loves pretending to fix things using the screwdrivers, hammer, etc. Another toy which got a lot of mileage (and still is!) is her doctor's kit. It's also great for familiarizing her with the doctor so she's not afraid to go, in fact, she kind of likes it! She uses her doctor kit to play dentist, too. :) Those are my suggestions for non-girly toys that I think your little one will enjoy.
Just to give you a balanced answer, though... Lil' K does love her girly toys too. One of her favorite things is her toy kitchen and play food. She likes to cook meals, have tea parties and picnics, and she also likes to go grocery shopping. (She has a toy cash register too - and we pretend we're at Costco. She even makes me check her receipt before she exits. haha) I think she started enjoying that stuff around 2 years old.
Hope that helps!
